Production fixtures and assembly aids

A production fixture locates a part so the same assembly or process step can be repeated. An assembly aid can hold, guide or present that part when the operation is still done by hand. Custom one-off tooling is for the case where a standard clamp or nest does not fit.

Locating, clamping and error proofing

The fixture locates and clamps the part in a defined position. Where a wrong orientation or a missed step is likely, the design can make that mistake harder to complete. That is error proofing for the task we have agreed. It is not a claim that every fault is prevented.

Inspection fixtures and ergonomics

An inspection fixture holds the part so a check is made in the same way each time. On a repetitive production task, the same work can change how the part is presented, so the operator is not working at an awkward reach.

From a first version to the production fixture

A first version can prove the location, the clamp and the operator’s access. The production fixture follows that check. Where the open question is a movement rather than a nest, that work sits with prototype mechanisms.
